Most teams buy intent data and then stare at it. The dashboard is full, the credits are burning, the sales team has been told "we have intent now," and yet pipeline looks the same as last quarter. The data isn't broken. The workflow around it is missing. To use intent data effectively in 2026, you combine first-party signals (your website, product, and CRM behavior) with third-party signals (content consumption across the web), score the blend by recency and relevance, prioritize the top tier of in-market accounts, and activate with coordinated ads, personalized web experiences, and outbound cadences — ideally triggered automatically rather than read off a sheet on Monday morning.

Skip this section if you're already shipping. Otherwise, line these up first or you'll be tuning a scoring model on top of a missing data layer.

  • A signal source you trust. First-party at minimum: a visitor-identification pixel on your site, a tagged set of high-intent pages (pricing, comparison, demo, integrations), and a CRM that records meeting requests, content downloads, and product signups. Third-party is a nice-to-have at the start, not a prerequisite.
  • A clean account list. Intent data is account-level. If your CRM is a sea of duplicates and lead-shaped objects with no parent account, fix that before you score anything.

  • Free and scrappy signals. LinkedIn audience activity (who's engaging with your competitors' posts), Google Trends in your category, Reddit and subreddit mentions of your space, GitHub stars on adjacent open-source projects. Low-resolution but real, and the price is right.

A useful question to ask any third-party vendor before signing: show me the last ten accounts that scored "in-market" on your platform that we ended up closing. If they can't run that query in the demo, the data isn't precise enough to act on.

Step 3 — Build your intent score

This is the step where most teams quietly give up and let the vendor's default scoring run. That's fine for week one. By month two you'll want your own formula because the vendor doesn't know which signals matter for your sales motion.

A starter scoring model that's served plenty of B2B teams well:

Score = (Recency × Relevance × Fit) — Decay

Each component, broken down:

  • Recency. A signal from this week is worth more than a signal from last month. Weight signals exponentially toward "today." A pricing-page visit two days ago is a different planet from one ninety days ago.
  • Relevance. Weight by signal type. A demo-page hit beats a blog post read. A G2 comparison-page view beats a generic Bombora topic surge. Build a simple lookup table where each signal type has a relevance multiplier between 1 (low) and 10 (high).
  • Fit. Firmographic match against your ICP — industry, size, geography, tech stack. Important, but resist the urge to weight it too heavily; otherwise you'll only see accounts that already look like your existing customers, which is not how you grow into a new segment.
  • Decay. Old signals lose value. A common rule: half-life of 14 days for behavioral signals, 30 days for content consumption, 7 days for high-intent page hits like pricing and demo. Without decay, your top-tier accounts list slowly fills with stale data and you stop trusting it.

To make it concrete: imagine a Series B SaaS account that hit your pricing page yesterday, ran three competitor searches on G2 this week, and downloaded an integration whitepaper a few days ago. Strong recency, strong relevance, decent fit if they match your ICP — that account might land somewhere around an 87 on a 0–100 scale. The exact number doesn't matter. The shape of it does: you want a single number per account that gets you to a defensible "should we act on this today, or not."

Common scoring mistakes that quietly ruin the model:

  • No decay. Old signals pile up and the top of your list goes stale. The fix is automatic decay on every signal.

Intent-data programs get killed not because they don't work, but because the wrong metrics get reported up. Pick leading and lagging indicators that map to pipeline.
